Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about service dog training, certification, and your rights in Georgia.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), any individual with a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities may qualify for a service dog. In Georgia, there is no state registry or special ID required — the ADA is the governing law. At Atlanta Service Dogs LLC, we begin with a free consultation to understand your specific needs and determine whether a service dog is the right path for you.
The timeline depends on the complexity of tasks your service dog needs to learn and whether we’re starting with a puppy from our breeding program or an older candidate. In general, professional medical-grade service dog training takes 12 to 24 months. This includes foundational obedience, public access training, task-specific training for your disability, and handler instruction. We don’t rush this process — every dog is trained to the highest standards before placement.
A service dog is individually trained to perform specific tasks directly related to a person’s disability — for example, mobility assistance, alerting to medical episodes, or interrupting psychiatric symptoms. Under the ADA, service dogs have full public access rights. An emotional support animal (ESA) provides comfort through companionship but is not trained to perform specific tasks and has more limited rights — primarily in housing under the Fair Housing Act.
We train medical-grade service dogs across four main specialties: Mobility Assistance Dogs for physical disabilities affecting balance and movement; Psychiatric Service Dogs for PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions; Developmental Support Dogs for autism and other developmental needs; and Companion/Emotional Support Dogs for those who benefit from trained animal companionship.
Yes — the ADA does not require that service dogs be trained by a professional organization. However, your dog must be trained to perform at least one specific task related to your disability and behave appropriately in public. Professional training dramatically increases the success rate of service dog teams. We offer handler training programs where we work with you and your dog together to meet professional standards.
Under the ADA, your service dog can accompany you virtually anywhere the public is allowed: restaurants, stores, hotels, hospitals, public transit, offices, and government buildings. In Georgia, businesses may only ask two questions: (1) Is this a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) What task has the dog been trained to perform? They cannot require documentation or charge extra fees. Georgia law provides additional protections for service dog teams.
CPDT-KSA stands for Certified Professional Dog Trainer — Knowledge and Skills Assessed, issued by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). It is one of the most respected credentials in the industry, requiring extensive hands-on experience, a rigorous knowledge exam, and a practical skills assessment. Our founder Ripley holds this certification.
The cost varies depending on the type of training, program length, and specific tasks required. Across the industry, fully trained medical-grade service dogs typically range from $15,000 to $50,000 or more. We work with each client to develop a program that fits their needs and budget. Absolutely. While we’re based in Atlanta, we serve clients throughout the entire Southeast and beyond — including Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Virginia. For clients outside Metro Atlanta, we offer flexible training arrangements including intensive on-site sessions and ongoing remote support.
While any breed can technically be a service dog with the right temperament, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Standard Poodles are among the most common choices for their reliability and trainability. The best breed depends on the handler’s specific needs — larger breeds suit mobility work, while smaller breeds may work well for psychiatric alert tasks. Our breeding program selects specifically for the traits that produce successful service dogs.
